Steve Smith, M.A.

Steve Smith serves as Vice President of Instruction and Workforce Education/Chief Academic Officer at El Paso Community College (EPCC). In this capacity, he oversees all instructional and continuing education programs at five campuses. EPCC is a comprehensive urban college with 28,800 credit students and 5,000 continuing education/non-credit students in El Paso, Texas. As Vice President he has district-wide responsibility for the College’s credit transfer, career and technical and developmental education programs, the Language Institute, Instructional Support Services, Counseling, Libraries, Distance Education, Curriculum Development, Student Success, Quality Enhancement Plan, and Student Learning Outcomes. He also has responsibility for the Advanced Technology Center, Small Business Development Center, Contract Opportunities Center, Law Enforcement Training Academy, Business and Industry Training, and Workforce and Economic Development. Administrators reporting to the Vice President include two Associate Vice Presidents, twelve Academic Deans and thirteen Directors. As a senior administrator, he oversees 2,312 employees including 450 full-time and 1,206 part-time faculty and a $56M budget.

Prior to his current role, he served as the Instructional Dean for Math, Science and CTE Division where he managed daily operations for 21 diverse disciplines. He also served as a full-time tenured professor in the IT Systems Discipline. He has been recognized with several awards including the National Council of Instructional Administrators (NCIA) 2015 Chief Academic Officer Emerging Leader Award, El Paso Energy Foundation Faculty Achievement Award, the Aristotle Award for creative classroom techniques, the NISOD Faculty Excellence Award and most recently the President’s NISOD Excellence Award.
