Jermaine Whirl

2020-21 Aspen Rising Presidents Fellow
Dr. Jermaine Whirl is the vice president of learning and workforce development at Greenville Technical College in South Carolina. He serves as the chief academic, continuing education, and economic development officer of the college and is responsible for all credit and noncredit instruction, policy making, compliance, and development activities. He serves as the official economic development liaison to the Greenville Area Development Corporation, Upstate SC Alliance, and the South Carolina Department of Commerce. His areas of supervision include seven academic schools and the college’s continuing education division.

Dr. Whirl is actively engaged on several boards, committees, and taskforces throughout the region. He provides service to organizations such as TD Bank, United Way, Greenville Chamber of Commerce, Prisma Health Sciences Center, Ten at the Top, South Carolina Commission on Higher Education, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond.

With the college since October 2016, Whirl previously served as vice president of economic development and corporate training. Prior to coming to Greenville Tech, he served as the dean of the school of business and school of art and design at Gwinnett Technical College and dean of adult education at Savannah Technical College. He’s also served as a full-time faculty member at Georgia Southern University and East Georgia State College.

A Charleston, South Carolina, native, he earned his AA degree at Trident Technical College, a B.A. degree at Winthrop University, an M.B.A. degree at Charleston Southern University, a M.Ed. in adult education at Georgia Southern University, and an Ed.D. in organizational leadership at Valdosta State University.
