Aspen Presidents Fellow

Dr. Mike Muñoz is the Superintendent-President of Long Beach City College (LBCC), a proud Hispanic-Serving Institution and the first California community college to receive the prestigious Seal of Excelencia—an honor the college has now received twice. In 2024, the Los Angeles Times recognized Dr. Muñoz as one of the region’s most influential leaders for his work expanding access and improving outcomes for historically underserved students.

Since taking the helm in 2021, Dr. Muñoz has led LBCC through a period of bold transformation, including securing a $30 million gift from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott—the largest in the college’s history. His efforts to strengthen Latinx student achievement have driven broader gains in student success and institutional progress—including record-high enrollment of over 22,000 Latinx students, who now make up 59% of the student body, and a dramatic increase in students’ sense of belonging and mattering, rising from 49% to 92% within just two years of his leadership.

A first-generation college graduate who overcame housing and food insecurity while raising his daughter as a single father, Dr. Muñoz brings both lived experience and deep expertise to his leadership. He holds a doctorate in Educational Leadership from CSU Long Beach and teaches in the USC Rossier School of Education.

Dr. Muñoz currently serves as President of the National Community College Hispanic Council, President in Residence at Excelencia in Education, is a member of the AACC President’s Academy, the ACCT Advisory Committee of Presidents, and is an active founding board member of COLEGAS, the California Community Colleges Latinx professional association.
