Melissa Wertz

Dr. Melissa A. Wertz has 30 years of experience in higher education, holding various positions. Her career began as a high school mathematics teacher and technology trainer. Early on, she worked at a community college, which ignited her interest in pursuing a career in higher education. She has held various roles with a shared focus on student support, faculty development, online learning, and innovative techniques for delivering and enhancing education. Her passions include leadership, online education, technology, continuous quality improvement, and helping others achieve their goals.

As Provost of Edison State Community College, she oversees the academic and student affairs departments. Dr. Wertz has an exceptional record of partnering with faculty, staff, leadership groups, and students to develop, deliver, and support high-quality learning experiences and services. She collaborates with leaders to plan, train, and reimagine higher education, with an emphasis on teaching, learning, and assessment, to address the needs of students, faculty, and the broader community.

As a Provost and Dean, she has initiated programs ranging from certificates to baccalaureate degrees, creating stackable credential options. She has spearheaded numerous campus-wide initiatives focused on teaching and student success, including digital textbooks, online programming, and professional development programs.

As an avid learner, Dr. Wertz believes that learning never stops and seizes learning opportunities whenever possible. She has presented at local, state, and national conferences. The common thread connecting all her experiences is a focus on lifelong learning, innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Dr. Wertz grew up in a small town east of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her hobbies include hiking, biking, reading, golfing, cooking, and exploring new restaurants. This diverse range of interests reflects her adventurous spirit and openness to new experiences. She readily agreed to skydive with a friend for a milestone birthday, showcasing her willingness to embrace life's adventures.
