Dual enrollment has been rapidly growing, now constituting over 20% of community college enrollments. While positive for students overall, this rapid growth has come at the expense of strategic planning and implementation. Among the challenges: students in dual enrollment are often not helped to explore careers or to take courses within a program of study, and those who participate in and benefit from dual enrollment are stratified by income and race. Aspen and the Community College Research Center researched community college-high school partnerships in three states whose dual enrollment students had strong levels of participation and outcomes—overall and for Black and Hispanic students—and produced a playbook to help others improve dual enrollment offerings. This playbook offers guidance for community colleges and high school partners to increase participation and success in dual enrollment at the scale needed to ensure more students broadly benefit from this promising trend.
